Jacksonville is home to a number of great neighborhoods.  From urban centers to quaint and quiet suburban streets, the city sprawls west into the countryside and east to the coast from it’s central feature, the Saint Johns, Southside, Julington Creek and Mandarin make up an interesting section of the city southwest of river.

Florida is famous for giant planned communities and this area of Jacksonville is no exception.  The majority of all Jacksonville shopping is located in this area and the communities surrounding it are private, gated and family friendly.  It is the picture of suburbia and everything that goes along with it.  Swimming pools, winding cul de sac streets, amenities centers, minivans and soccer moms are all present in droves  on the cities southwest side.   Everything you could want or need is just a quick drive away from shopping and restaurants to big box stores and industry.

A little history of the St. Johns area:

St. Johns, a suburb of Jacksonville in northwest St. Johns County, Florida, is an unincorporated community that has experienced significant growth in recent years. Its population, which was 18,063 in the 2000 census, has now grown to an estimated 86,400 as of 2016. Situated in the Jacksonville metropolitan area, St. Johns is located about midway between downtown Jacksonville and downtown St. Augustine.

The entire 32259 ZIP code, which includes Fruit Cove, Switzerland, and Julington Creek, constitutes St. Johns. At the 2010 census, this ZIP code had a population of 36,917, and covered a land area of 57.66 square miles.

Geography

According to the 2013 TIGER/Line Shapefiles by the U.S. Census Bureau, St. Johns mailing address pertains to the area of St. Johns County situated to the north of County Road 210 and to the west of U.S. Route 1. The community and county’s northern boundary are primarily formed by Julington Creek and Durbin Creek, which also make up the southern edge of Jacksonville, while its western boundary runs along the St. Johns River, opposite Fleming Island and Green Cove Springs. On the east, Nocatee is situated across US 1, whereas to the south, there are SilverLeaf Plantation and World Golf Village (with a St. Augustine mailing address). St. Johns is located roughly 10 miles (16 km) east of the Atlantic Ocean, and it has a relatively low elevation, with the highest point only about 10 or 12 feet above sea level.

St. Johns comprises Fruit Cove, which is a census-designated place (CDP) that includes Julington Creek and Switzerland, two historically distinct areas. Other recent developments outside of the Fruit Cove CDP include Aberdeen, Durbin Crossing, and Rivertown.

Schools

The St. Johns County School District provides educational services to St. Johns. Among its elementary schools are Cunningham Creek Elementary, Durbin Creek Elementary, Hickory Creek Elementary, and Julington Creek Elementary. Timberlin Creek Elementary is situated south of CR 210, but it serves the Cimarrone Golf Club neighborhood in St. Johns. Fruit Cove Middle School and Switzerland Point Middle School are the two middle schools in the area. High school attendance is determined by specific zones, with students residing north and west of certain boundaries attending Creekside High School, and the remaining students attending Bartram Trail High School. Additionally, there are two K-8 schools in the vicinity, namely Liberty Pines Academy and Patriot Oaks Academy.

History

Previously, the area was listed under Jacksonville in the United States Postal Service, despite its location in St. Johns County. In 2005, the residents of the area voted on a new name to differentiate the community in a USPS poll. Among five alternatives, “St. Johns” was selected over River Cove, St. Johns Cove, River Oaks, and Bartram. Some area activists and residents, especially those from the historic Fruit Cove and Switzerland communities, opposed any name change. Nevertheless, the “Anything but Jacksonville” initiative by the chamber council paved the way for St. Johns to be adopted by USPS computers.

Although the postal service still accepts Jacksonville, Fruit Cove, Switzerland, and Sampson as valid names for 32259, Saint Johns is the primary or default name in post office databases. Also interesting is that USPS suggests using the full name instead of abbreviating it to “St.”
